I started the Dr. Healy Diet Centers because in my medical practice I noticed how many
of the diseases I was treating were weight related. I found that weight reduction was often more effective than
any other treatment for diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, back, hip, knee pain, and many other conditions.
My patients were anxious to get help with their weight but at first I had nothing to offer
except "eat less and exercise more". Most doctors still only offer this one piece of advice that is
useless.
Over the years I have worked with thousands of over weight patients and have developed a
very effective treatment program.
Of all the prescription medications now available for weight control I have found four to
be most effective. I like to start my patients off on a medication called Bontril or phendimetrazine.

phendimetrazine.
Bontril or Phendimetrazine is very effective for appetite control and controlling
cravings. It also has a thermogenic effect that boosts the metabolic rate. It is low in side effects
and inexpensive.
Using a drug alone is usually not effective for losing much weight. To really get
significant amounts of weight loss we have to take advantage of the control that we get from the
medication to eat an optimal diet for rapid weight loss.
The optimal diet for rapid weight loss is one that is low in calories, low in
carbohydrates, sufficient in protein, and with small frequent meals through out the day. For most
of our patients we use an 800-calorie diet. Most women usually consume 2500 to 3000 calories per
day, so this will usually yield a loss of two to four pounds per week.
Losing weight at this pace is helpful because it keeps the patient motivated by
the positive feedback. Slow weight loss is fine but usually the patient will become bored or
discouraged and quit trying.
An 800 calorie diet is safe and healthy when it includes all the nutrients and
vitamins that the body needs. Chief among these essential nutrients is protein. The average woman
needs about 70 grams of protein in the diet per day to maintain her lean body mass. Our goal is
body fat reduction not just any weight loss.
The way we do the diet is to have you eat just one meal per day of regular
food. That is three ounces of meat, chicken, or fish and a cup of vegetables or salad. We replace
everything else that you normally would eat during the day with a series of protein snacks. They
come in shakes, puddings, bars, soups, cookies, and juices.
These snacks are all high in protein, low in calories, carbohydrates, fat,
and salt. They taste good and most importantly they are portable and convenient. This is important
because it normally takes a lot of time and advance preparation to eat this kind of diet. If you
do not prepare in advance you will be left to fast food or vending machine food or you will just
skip the meal or snack. None of these options will help you lose weight.
For beverages you can have any type of non-caloric drink like water, diet
soda, coffee, or tea. No regular sodas, fruit juices, or alcohol. These have a lot of sugar
or turn into sugar in the body.
This program is probably the easiest way to lose large amounts of weight
for those who are motivated to make a change. Studies have shown that patients lose more weight
when specific goals are made and a bonus plan is included in the program. We incorporate the
results of these studies in our three-month commitment. We reward patients for behaviors that
lead to the desired outcome.
The medication can have a few side effects but they are mild and temporary.
The most common are dry mouth, slight nervousness, and insomnia. If these occur they will
usually resolve themselves in a few days.
I would like you to begin a program of regular exercise also. Walking for
30 minutes daily will do. This is very important for maintaining your weight loss once you
have achieved it. The exercise helps you to burn calories, maintain a higher metabolic rate
and psychologically makes you think more about what you eat.
No matter how you lose weight, you will have to work to maintain it. A
good way to do a maintenance diet is to build upon the eating pattern you develop during
the rapid weight phase. You can make substitutions and add some fruits and starches but
maintain the pattern of small frequent meals.
This program is GUARANTEED to work for anyone
who is motivated and dedicated.
